The time of year that demands steamy beverages and mugs you can wrap your hands around for warmth is knocking at the door! Most of us probably have a go-to favorite mug for such occasions, but if you’re like me there’s always an excuse to make room for another.

Countdown to Halloween

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Nope, not Christmas – autumn, October, and Halloween. October 31st has long been a big deal in my family, from great aunts and uncles creating haunted houses in their basements to massive trick or treating, it’s given me some of my best memories. This year feels a bit out of whack since I’m still trying to get my house together post move and figuring out where the movers put everything (and yes, where I put everything while unpacking). I have pumpkins and mums decorating my front porch and a few favorite spooky pieces indoors, but the majority is in the basement. I’m hoping to dig a few more decorations out before hundreds of trick or treaters descend on my neighborhood (from the realtor’s lips to my ears) the night of the 31st. But if you’re more together than I am here are twenty-two of Halloween best ideas for you to tackle!

Lasagna 10 Ways

Until recently I never realized just how versatile lasagna can be. Of course the usual trifecta of pasta sheets, tomato sauce, and cheese is a sure win, but what about the myriad of fillings and forms – other than in a baking dish  – for you to get creative and choose from? Warm and gooey foods were made for cooler months… you see where I’m going with this right? Take a peek at lasagna ten ways, and then tell us about your favorite way to serve it at home.

Road Snacks

Road Snacks-1-Design Crush

Hi! Kate here, from Cookie and Kate. I offer fresh, vegetarian recipes on my blog. I had the pleasure of getting to know Kelly when I was new to blogging and living in Oklahoma. My dog, Cookie, and I moved up to Kansas City a couple of years ago. Since Kelly is in the process of moving back to Pennsylvania, she asked me to share a few travel-friendly snacks. Safe travels, Kelly!

Almond Honey Granola: This is my go-to granola recipe. It’s a great, wholesome snack for the road. You can eat it as is or stop for some yogurt and turn it into breakfast.

Road Snacks-3-Design Crush

Lebanese Lemon-Parsley Salad: This simple bean salad is packed with flavor. Store it in a spill-proof container and don’t forget your fork! It should last at room temperature for a few hours, but pack it in a cooler if you intend to wait any longer before eating.

Road Snacks-4-Design Crush

Apricot Almond Bars: These knock-off Larabars are easy to make in a food processor and feature one of my favorite flavor combinations. They keep hunger pangs at bay in between meals.

Road Snacks-5-Design Crush

Banana Coconut Muffins: These tasty muffins are more wholesome than most. They’re made with whole wheat flour and naturally sweetened with honey. Pro tip: Don’t leave your dog in the car with an open bag of muffins.

Embroidery is one of those trends that ebbs and flows, but never truly goes away in entirety. I think that has more to do with the style than the technique, because it can be everything from intricate and Victorian in nature to geometric and modern. We’e all seen it play out this summer on light and airy sundresses, so I’m interested in seeing how (and if) it translates to fall’s fashions!

A Fresh Start

You know that scene in You’ve Got Mail where Tom Hank’s character tells Meg Ryan’s that if he knew her address he would send her a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils? That’s exactly how the beginning of the school year makes me feel, even though I’m no longer a student and don’t have kids. There’s just something in the air that to me signifies a fresh start, maybe even more than New Year’s does. I still troll the school supplies section as soon as it hits the big box stores, but I hold myself to one purchase. Usually a new notebook.

Crepes 10 Ways

Crepes are pancake’s skinnier sister, though we don’t discriminate. Where pancakes can be heavy in your mis-section, crepes are light. Pancakes are best paired with sweet toppings, whereas crepes can be stuffed or topped with sweet or savory. They’re just a fantastic palette for whatever delicious things you have on hand to pair with them. (And that’s not even taking into account the varied flavors you can create for the crepes themselves.) Here are ten takes on crepes to get your mouth watering!

Summertime Hellos

Summer snail mail is some of my favorite to send and receive. Maybe it brings back memories of simpler times, when email and cell phones weren’t commonplace and summers were spent at camp. My mom would send me a card with a letter every. single. day. (She’s the best.) And I still have every one to this day. (In a box alongside my color war flags and camp crafts, obvs.) I think I need to read them over again sometime soon, and maybe send off a few of these summertime hellos to surprise some friends!

Summer Staple: Ice Cream Sandwiches

After a week of ice cream, lemonade, popsicles, and potato salad we’re wrapping up our week of summer staples with one of the most portable of treats – ice cream sandwiches! And we’re going far beyond the traditional chocolate with vanilla ice cream that we all grew up with smeared on our hands and faces.
