Alba

Alba-1-Design Crush

Who knew that a simple gradient, making its way from dark to light on its way from bottom to top, could make a planter pop so much?! Thanks to rotational moulding technology and a hand-finished border, Alba is a fantastic display of what can happen when high tech meets lo-fi creationism. Each “vase” is available in either two or three colors, with three options available for each and made for use either indoors or out. (There’s even a range of lights which are a hanging version of the same design!)

Forest & Waves

Forest & Waves-1-Design Crush

The start of September signifies all things fall, which means cozy items like blankets and sweaters are fair game on the blog once again. I’m ready to start off my favorite season (thought it’s not officially here just yet) with some goods from Forest & Waves. Everything in the shop seems just right for sitting around a fire and enjoying all of the lovely cooler weather that’s heading our way.

Embroidery is one of those trends that ebbs and flows, but never truly goes away in entirety. I think that has more to do with the style than the technique, because it can be everything from intricate and Victorian in nature to geometric and modern. We’e all seen it play out this summer on light and airy sundresses, so I’m interested in seeing how (and if) it translates to fall’s fashions!

Another Country

Another Country-1-Design Crush

I definitely have a crush on Another Country‘s contemporary craft furniture and accessories. The clean lines of their offerings are inspired by British Country kitchen style, Shaker, traditional Scandinavian, and Japanese woodwork. Clean lines, 100% functional, quality goods at a respectable price point – all of which will only make you feel better about adding any one of these pieces to your home.

Geo Stands

Geo Stands-1-Design Crush

A set of three solid brass paperweights with a brushed finish – Geo Stands – that double as holders for photos or cards seem like just the thing for many places besides a desk. (Though they would obviously be perfect there as well!) I’m picturing a set with smallish (5″ x 7″?) art prints on my mantle. Each one measures 1.25″ tall, just big enough to have a presence without overwhelming whatever is in their grasp.

#makegood

You’re right, I never post on Saturday. But today is special, because I’m shining a light on five of the incredible makers whose creations are available at Design Crush: The Marketplace. (In fact, lots of GREAT.LY‘s tastemakers are doing the same July 21st through August 4th through the #makegood campaign.) Read on for a snapshot of some of my favorites!

A-Sensible-Habit-Design-Crush

A Sensible Habit creates hand painted linens, rubber stamps, and stationery. The Atlanta-based shop leans towards domesticity and entertaining in a playful way by creating pieces that will give your home and your get togethers that extra special touch.

Favorite Item: Set of 4 H ot Pink Brushstroke Cocktail Coasters

Fanny-&-June-Design-Crush

Nashville’s Fanny & June purveys fancy fascinators that are perfect for wedding season and patterned clutches that are perfect for every other day.

Favorite Item: Pink and Red Ikat Clutch

Jill-Rosenwald-Design-Crush

In the market for some pottery? Jill Rosenwald‘s hand-makes the shiny chic variety in her Boston studio. Choose from vases, bowls, and more that will add a dose of pattern or color to your space.

Favorite Piece: Erin Gates Collection #6 Vase

papergluebamboo-Design-Crush

Japanese techniques are alive and well at papergluebamboo. The Carmel, California-based shop uses ikkanbari (papering) and chigiri-e (pictures torn from paper) to create a collection of updated traditional pieces.

Favorite Item: Pebbled Bed Side Trays

Yucu-Ninu-Design-Crush

Yucu Ninu‘s stunning otomi pieces are made through collaborations with Mexican artists and cooperatives. The emphasis on fair trade prices, ancient traditions, and promotion of social trade make each beautiful piece that much more special.

Favorite Item: Otomi Pillow Cover

Shop these and many other talented makers at Design Crush: The Marketplace and check out the #makegood hashtag for more featured makers. It’s so rewarding to support independent artists and makers!

Grain

Grain-1-Design Crush

Aside from creating beautifully designed wares, Grain has another purpose – a dedication to social and environmental responsibility. (You know how I love a company that gives back.)  As committed members of 1% For The Planet, one percent of Grain’s annual revenue goes back to environmental non-profits. Their work unites current manufacturing technologies and age-old craft techniques, and goods are produced in small batch runs in their Bainbridge Island studio. Good design plus conscientiousness equals all the more reason to buy! Check out my favorite pieces: Hung Mirror, Circlet Triple Sconce, Bound Hand V1, Grail Cassoulet, and Strung Sconce.
