Tahir Mahmood

Tahir Mahmood-1-Design Crush

Tahir Mahmood’s mortar and pestle collection is more than kitchen instruments, it’s straight up art. I love this contemporary take on such a century’s old instrument. Both parts are made of Dalbergia Sissoo wood and shaped with a lathe, then Mahmood creates the vibrant colors with a sap-based resin and applies them with palm leaves.

Side Project Skateboards

Side Project Skateboards-1-Design Crush

Confession: In 9th and 10th grades I longed to learn how to skateboard. All of my guy friends did it and it looked like so much fun. But I’ve always resided firmly in the lack-of-balance pool (trust that you don’t want to see my do yoga) and showed zero to no promise. Of course that didn’t stop me from dressing the part (eek), decorating the steamer trunk in my room with company’s stickers, or admiring boards.

When Jake from Side Project Skateboards contacted me about his pop-up shop, the images caught me totally off guard. They’re beyond gorgeous. The limited edition of 18 handmade, vintage-inspired boards are crafted entirely from American-made components and materials. In fact most of the wood is actually repurposed, chosen for its beautiful grains and visual appeal. (Is it too late to have another go at skateboarding??)

Elisa Strozyk

Wooden. Rugs. Rolls those two words around in your mind hole for a minute or two. German artist Elisa Strozyk has created three variations of these delightful coverings. Strozyk dyes and connects row upon row of triangular pieces as she pulls together the end result of a colored wooden rug, which is so flexible that you can literally crumple it up and toss it into a corner. Marbelous Wood

Marbelous Wood-1-Design Crush

Oh, hey there – I’m sorry, but I just can’t stop staring at these images of Marbelous Wood. It’s crazy good, right?? Pernille Snedker uses a repurposed marbling technique from old book covers to give wood this incredible look. Produced one drop of color at a time, ring by ring, the pattern is constructed on the water surface. The final result being a reflection of the annual rings of wood and a product that can be used on both walls and floors. (via Mint)
