Crush-worthy Designs

Hi friends! Erin from Apartment 34 here and I’m thrilled to help keep Design Crush warm while Miss Kelly is away. And since she’s in one of my very favorite places in the world – Italia – probably unearthing amazing design, I decided to take a crack at something similar. Only from the comforts of my couch (I begged her to take me in her suitcase but va’ bene (so it goes!).

So I give you Four Design Crush-worthy Finds. I do hope you all agree! Bon Viaggio Kelly, and thanks again for having me.

Branding the Presidents of the United States

With the presidential election only a few weeks away, this project seems especially timely. Branding the Presidents of the United States is an ongoing graphics project by Meg Jannott to push her own creativity and give all 44 presidents a branded identity. I’d say it’s going smashingly.

100 Book Covers to Fight Illiteracy

Belgian graphic design studio beshart brought together 100 artists from 28 countries for the 100 Book Covers to Fight Illiteracy project. The goal of the project? Redesigning covers for the 100 greatest novels of all time to raise awareness of illiteracy. You can buy your own, and for each poster sold 5 euro will be donated directly to the fight against illiteracy. When a good cause meets great design you really can’t go wrong.

Penguin Drop Cap Series

I think we can all agree that Jessica Hische is a pretty big badass in the hand-drawn type world. If you’ve been following her Daily Drop Cap blog (since 2009) you’ll be just as excited as I am to know that Hische has partnered with Penguin’s art director, Paul Buckley, in the eventual release of a series of 26 hardcover classics. Each book will feature a drop cap unique to the series, the first six of which will go on sale November 27th. I love the gradient that’s apparent in these first releases and I hope it continues on throughout the series. And yes, I’ll need every last one so it’s a good thing they’re available for pre-order right here.

Sigils of the Houses of Westeros

PHOTOS + LINK via FPO

I’m a total Game of Thrones nerd. After watching the first season last year I couldn’t wait for the second. So I read the entire existing series in six weeks. Obsessed! You can imagine how thrilled I was when I saw this Sigils of the Houses of Westeros poster by Darrin Crescenzi. Crescenzi took the author’s – George R. R. Martin – descriptions of each house’s mark and created beautifully simplistic icons. (He spends his days designing for Nike, can you tell?)
