Don’t even get me started on that logo, but the 2012 London Olympics kick off Friday and I couldn’t be more excited – I’m such a nerd. I guess it all started back in the Barcelona Games in 1992, when Kim Zmeskal and Shannon Miller (who I later took a college anthropology course with, FYI) faced off in gymnastics. I recorded it on VHS and rewatched the all-around competition over and over again. Like I didn’t know the end result. There’s just something so captivating about people who work so hard and are so incredibly driven towards something that gets me in the gut. Which is why I’ll be absolutely glued to the television for the next two weeks and go into a mild depression after the Closing Ceremony. Wait, is 32 too late to pick up a sport?

Yay Olympics! Every time they play one one of those bio stories about an athlete’s life and how hard they’ve worked to get here, I cry. Every. Time. I had the opportunity to see the men’s gymnastics trials in San Jose this year and it was SO exciting! Being in the same building with all of these super hard-working, talented athletes and getting to cheer them all on was really uplifting. Go Team!

I’m an avid Olympics fan, too!! I’m glued to the TV throughout the entire thing, but gymnastics is my favorite sport!! I pay attention to what’s going on in gymnastics year-round, and the Olympic Games are the ultimate competition. I’m so so so excited!!!
So awesome you had a class with Shannon Miller!! I was 6 years old in 1992, so I only remember bits and pieces of those Games. 1996 is the first Games I remember the entire thing. The Magnificent Seven gymnastics team was the best part about it!!

Yeah, what is up with that logo?! That’s amazing that you had a class with Shannon Miller. I was a gymnast growing up and had a collage of the Mag 7 on my wall that year.

I, too, was a gymnast (for 18 yrs) and actually was lucky enough to attend the ’96 games in Atlanta. There was also a vhs recording we took that I watched every day for months on end and, embarrassing confession.. ‘Devil Went Down to GA’ still makes me think of Dominique Moceanu’s floor routine! Ha. Might have to mosey on over to YouTube now to do a little reminiscing !

Im awed by Olympics, how it has sparked patriotism across nations ..its feels great to see how they sing their national anthems and fly their flags.
